How to: images and considerations

Images have a big impact on your website visitors. Majority of information transmitted to the brain is visual and is processed by the brain much faster. Various statistics suggest that visitors are more likely to stay if your site has images. Of course, it’s important to ensure that the images are relevant, but long blocks of text can be daunting so be creative!

Images¬†play big importance in presenting and enlivening your content. It’s not just photos, there are many image styles available:

  • graphs
  • illustrations
  • photos
  • infographics
  • photos

With this in mind, we’ll concentrate on how best to prepare your images for using on your pages and what you should concentrate on when getting your images together.

Size – the larger the image, the longer it will take for the page to load.

Copyright – copyright issues in website usage are complex, and quite often seen as “free for all”. This is not the case, and just because an image is on the internet, it cannot be used just by anyone.

Sourcing images – with view to avoid any potential copyright issues you ¬†might face in the future, it’s best to ensure you get use images in a legal way:
a) Own images
b) Flickr – images with appropriate licenses and correct attribution given on the website
c) Purchased licensed images – many online providers, such as Shutterstock, Fotolia, iStock photos just for starters

Naming – it is important you name your images in a way that describes the image. Image names are searched by Google bots and help with your search engine listings.

Interestingness – this can be information new to visitors, humorous images, beautiful photos. Always consider appropriateness of the image to your audience and to the content of your site.

How to: add image in WordPress

Adding an image in WordPress is extremely easy. This article describes adding an image in WP v4.1.

1. Within your editing window, point to where you’d like to place your image.

2. Click Add Media in top left corner, just above the editing window.

3. Media Library opens.

4. You have two options here.

a) you can drag and drop images directly from your file explorer window whether you have the Media Library or Upload Files selected

b) click the Upload Files tab, then click on Select Files; file explorer window opens, you select your files and click Open. As with (almost) anything, you can Ctrl-click multiple files and add them to your Library at the same time.

5. Click on the selected image and fill in the necessary fields. The most important is Alt Text, which should include a short description of the image.
